Thomas Ambrose Bowen
1916 - 1982
The technique was developed by Tom Bowen of Geelong, Australia. He left school at the age of 14 and took various manual labouring jobs.
It is not known how he developed his remarkable gift, but what is known that he started his work on race horses and grey hounds, before he later came to primarily work on humans.
He started helping people in his workplace by making simple moves on their aches and pains. However, soon the word started to spread and people started visiting him at home. He became so busy that he had to give up his day job and started treating people full time.
He never advertised his therapy and never took any formal qualifications, but he did call himself an Osteopath until the title became regulated in the 70's. It was recorded that Tom Bowen was estimated to be doing 13,000 treatments a year. Most of these were not repeat treatments.
Tom Bowen taught few people his technique over the years and the ones he did teach were men. One of these men was Oswald Rentch. Rentch wrote down what he had learnt from Bowen and after his death in 1982 he continued to teach his interpretation of the technique.
Tom ran a free childrens clinic on one saturday morning a month. The conditions that presented included cerebral palsy, spina - bifida and para/quadra-plegics. After his death Kevin Ryan who also worked with Bowen carried on these clinics for a further 12 years.
Bowens work was mainly based on intuition and a deep understanding of every individuals need. He was constantly looking for the root cause of his clients condition even if the symptoms were the same. He worked using minimal intervention using only a few moves to achieve a positive outcome.
The Bowen motto still stands today of ''less is more''. He was a truly remarkable man and it is a great honour to be able to use his technique, that we now all call The Bowen Technique.
